Artist: Claude Cambour

Description: Giverny H 58.5X 78 W. Oil on Canvas. Price 17,000$

Inspired by Giverny, the village and its environs, immortalized by Monet, Claude Cambour is following in the footsteps of the French Impressionists.

Recognized in art circles for his landscapes and outdoor painting, he has developed a style that is stamped with his own inventiveness. It is a style
characterized by shimmering sunlight and true, luminous colors. Among the subject matter of which Cambour is noted are flower gardens, village
roadways, towering forests, and sparkling waterway; however, his series of paintings on Giverny, and more specifically Monet’s gardens, have brought
him his greatest acclaim. Cambour was introduced to the world of art and artists through Maurice de Vlaminck whose grandfather was Vlaminck’s gardener.
He later settled in the region of Giverny where he painted the beauty of the countryside.

Michel Legrand with Brigitte Saint-Ouen in New York at the Blue Note

Legrand is probably best-known for his often haunting film music and scores, such as The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Thomas Crown Affair

(1968), which features the song "The Windmills of Your Mind."

Legrand has composed more than two hundred film and television scores and several musicals and has made well over a hundred albums. He has won three
Oscars (out of 13 nominations) and five Grammys and has been nominated for an Emmy. He was twenty-two when his first album, (I Love Paris), became one
of the best-selling instrumental albums ever released. He is a virtuoso jazz and classical pianist and an accomplished arranger and conductor who
performs with orchestras all over the world.

May 4–July 31 Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Metropolitan Museum 1000 Fifth Av at 82nd Street 212-535-7710 Each piece has a story as overwhelming as
the objects themselves, feathered frocks, fresh flowers, a neckpiece made from what appeared to be turkeys' heads and gullets, the infamous Armadillo
shoes, a crimson breastplate that reached over the mannequin's face with a place for the eyes cut out. They bring the viewer face to face with what is
beautiful, but also bizarre, an effect that is uniquely Alexander McQueen.

June 29–November 27 Mother India: The Goddess in Indian Painting Metropolitan Museum 1000 Fifth Av at 82nd Street 212-535-7710 In India, the Goddess
(Devi) is the omnipresent embodiment of power and wisdom. Devi in her myriad forms—benign, maternal, empowering, and fearsome—expresses the range of
human emotion and is perhaps the most widely worshipped deity in all India, standing alongside Shiva and Vishnu in the first rank of the Hindu,
Buddhist, and Jain pantheons.

July 26–October 10 Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum 1000 Fifth Av at 82nd Street 212-535-7710 The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the most
important collection of paintings in America by the celebrated Dutch artist Frans Hals (1582/83–1666), whose portraits and genre scenes were famous in
his lifetime for their immediacy and dazzling brushwork. Several of the Museum's paintings are being loaned, as well as a few from private collectors
from New York City. The Merrymakers at Shrovetide Yonker Ramp and His Sweetheart and the small, exquisite Portrait of Samuel Ampzing(1630), on copper,
and the well-known Fisher Girl (1630–32). A selection of other Dutch paintings from the Museum's collection and a few engravings will set Hals's work
in the context of his native Haarlem and will help clarify how exceptional his animated poses and virtuoso brushwork were at the time. A portrait by
Manet, inspired by Hals, will also demonstrate how strongly Hals anticipated Impressionist effects.

June 30– October 16 Lyonel Feininger: At The Edge Of The World Whitney Museum 945 Madison Ave. at 75th St New York Born and raised in New York, Lyonel
Feininger (1871–1956) moved at the age of sixteen to Germany, where he became one of the leading practitioners of German Expressionism and the Bauhaus.
In the late 1930s, when the Nazi campaign against modern art forced him to flee back to New York after an absence of fifty years, his marriage of
abstraction and recognizable imagery made him a beloved artist in the United States.

April 28– September 18 Breaking Ground: The Whitney’s Founding Collection 945 Madison Ave (212) 570-3600 . This exhibition features a selected group of
works from the approximately 1,000 objects in the Whitney’s founding collection, including iconic paintings by artists such as Stuart Davis, Charles
Sheeler, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as works by lesser-known artists. Co-curated by Barbara Haskell
and Sasha Nicholas.

August 24–November 14, 2011 Carlito Carvalhosa: Sum of Days The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street New York 212-948-7400 Brazilian artist
Carlito Carvalhosa (b. 1961) conceived Sum of Daysas an environmental and participatory sound installation—a monumental, voluminous construction made
of soft, white, translucent material that hangs from the ceiling to the floor and takes the shape of an elliptical labyrinth. This structure hides, or
interrupts, the defined limits of its surrounding architectural space, allowing an experience of total immersion while suspending the usual parameters
of spatial reference known to the beholders.

fragments, and textiles from the Museum’s collection that reveal the attempts of successive generations to shape their experience of living in the

March 2–January 30 2012 Standard Deviations: Types and Families in Contemporary Design The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street New York
212-948-7400 Since the late 19th century and throughout much of the 20th, designers have celebrated the socially uplifting promise of industrial
production, believing the true path to modernity lay in standardization. A designer’s job was to conceive a model that could be converted into a
working prototype—a blueprint for a series of objects, each identical and manufactured according to exacting rules.

June 30–September 19 Contemporary Art from the Collection The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street New York 212-948-7400 The works selected for
this installation highlight the debates around economics, politics, gender, and ethnicity that have permeated artistic practices since the late 1960s.
Including approximately 130 works drawn from all of the Museum's curatorial departments, the installation features a variety of approaches to

May 10- August 14 Jaume Plensa's Echo Madison Square Park 10 Madison Avenue New York (212) 538-1884 Subway: 23 St On the morning of May 5, Jaume
Plensa's Echo was officially opened to the public with a Press Conference, presided over by Kate D. Levin, the Commissioner of New York City's
Department of Cultural Affairs. The crowd, which included members of the American and Spanish press, heard remarks from Plensa himself about the
process of installing his sculpture on site in Madison Square Park. David Berliner, Chairman of the Madison Square Park Conservancy, and Debbie Landau,
President of the Conservancy also gave remarks and thanked the team it took to erect the 44' sculpture in the middle of the Oval Lawn

FREE FRENCH SCREENINGS IN NYC PARKS

From the seaside villages of Brittany to the rocky hills of southern Provence, Films on the Green will take you on a cinematic tour of France thissummer. In its fourth year, Films on the Green, co-organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the New York City Department of Parks

& Recreation, is offering free outdoor screenings in New York City Parks.

Summer Vacation is the theme of the 2011 film line-up, visited through an array of styles and genres over the course of seven screenings and a special
event at Columbia University in September.

Fridays in June & July: screenings will begin at dusk (around 8:30pm)

April 3rd through June 30, 2011 New Orleans France in America The French Heritage Society, with the support of the Consulate General presents "France
in America," a photographic exhibition which will take place in New Orleans from April 3rd through June 30, 2011.The photographs of Arielle de la Tour
d’Auvergne recall the French presence in America through architecture. Forty panels of 1 meter 20 by 1 meter 20 illustrating the book French America
will be exposed at the Ursuline Couvent. This building is one of the finest examples of French colonial architecture in the United States; it will
celebrate this heritage by hosting the photographic exhibit in French America

June 15 – 19 Basel Art Fair Located on the banks of the Rhine, at the border between Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel is easily navigated by foot
and trams. The world's premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North
America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of
emerging stars, are represented in the show's multiple sections. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings,
installations, photographs, video and edition works. Such Artists like Rodney Graham who will be presenting Through the Forest and Marcel van Eeden

February 27–June 5, 2011 Gauguin: Maker of Myth Paul Gauguin's sumptuous, colorful images of Brittany and the islands of the South Seas are some of the
most appealing paintings in modern art. They will be represented among nearly 120 works by Gauguin in the first major look at the artist's oeuvre in
the United States since the blockbuster National Gallery of Art retrospective of 1988–1989, The Art of Paul Gauguin. Organized by Tate Modern, London,
in association with the Gallery, Gauguin: Maker of Myth brings together self-portraits, genre pictures, still lifes, and landscapes from throughout the
artist's career. It includes not only oil paintings but also pastels, prints, drawings, sculpture, and decorated functional objects. Organized
thematically, the exhibition examines Gauguin's use of religious and mythological symbols to tell stories, reinventing or appropriating narratives and
myths drawn both from his European cultural heritage and from Maori legend.

May 8, 2011–July 31, 2011 The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures from the Court of BurgundyArt of the Americas Building, Level 2 The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures
from the Court of Burgundy was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, under the auspices of FRAME (French
Regional and American Museum Exchange). The exhibition is supported by a leadership gift from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation. Additional
support is provided by the Florence Gould Foundation, the Eugene McDermott Foundation, Connie Goodyear Baron, and Boucheron. Major corporate support is

exhibition with an added Southeast Asian touch. Its Singapore and Southeast Asia debut will feature an expanded exhibition, showcasing SAM’s own
collection of video works and installations by Southeast Asian artists, such as Lee Wen, Dinh Q Lê, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba and Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook,
alongside Centre Pompidou’s collection by internationally renowned artists such as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Bruce Nauman, Jean-Luc Godard, Pierre
Huyghe and Isaac Julien. Based on the video and multimedia installations of the Centre Pompidou and SAM, the exhibition recounts the history of this
very contemporary field punctuating the main phases of contemporary art from 1965 to 2010. The exhibition is a collaboration between Centre Pompidou
Chief-curator of New Media Christine Van Assche and SAM assistant curator Patricia Levasseur de la Motte.

exhibition featuring recent acquisitions and donations by the museum. In April 2011, the National Art Gallery, Singapore will feature a selection works
drawn from a donation collection of Tan Oe Pang, which will showcase a variety of the artist’s works in ink and oil.Singaporean artist Tan Oe Pang is
one of the country’s established ink artists. His daring use of ink and vivid composition push the boundaries of Chinese ink practice, and mark him as
one of the most innovative practitioners in the medium today. Tan was a participant in the prestigious International Biennial of Arts Valparaiso and
the International Biennial of Arts Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Record Sales for Turn of the Century Art in New York

A rare wooden sculpture by post-impressionist master, Paul Gauguin, recently sold for 11.2 million dollars at Sotheby’s. This is the first sculpture by
the artist to sell for such an impressive sum. The previous record for a Gauguin sculpture reaches 1.4 million, only one tenth of his most recent sale
price.

Le Guichet: Sculpture by Alexander Calder

When Alexander Calder was selected by Lincoln Center for a 14-foot-high outdoor sculpture, it was a major victory for the home team in the big-league
global competition among contemporary artists. "He is one hundred percent American," Fernand Léger had proclaimed in an effusive welcoming message for
a gallery show in Paris more than three decades before. Le Guichet offers viewers a chance to wander into and through its spiderlike apertures, looking
up at the blue sky and marveling not only at the way Calder cut these graceful forms from plates of steel but also at the lively way in which he
assembled them.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, an heiress and sculptor born to one of America’s wealthiest families, began to assemble a rich and highly diverse collection of modern American art.

Taking its inspiration from the critically acclaimed book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell, this online experiment and resulting installation will explore how our initial reaction to a work of art is affected by what we know, what we’re asked, and what we’re told about the object in question.

June 24th- October 22, 2011 Brooklyn Museum Vishnu: Hinduisms Blue – Skinned Savior- Is the first major museum exhibition to focus on Vishnu, one of Hinduism’s three major deities. Presenting approximately 170 paintings, sculptures, and ritual objects that were made in India between the fourth and twentieth centuries, this exhibition serves as a brief survey of Hindu art styles as well as an examination of the Vaishnava (Vishnu-worshipping) tradition.

This exhibition will present thirteen paintings by Hals, including two lent from private collections, and several works by other Netherlandish masters.
April 13–August 28, 2011- Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective
This first retrospective of the drawings of American contemporary artist Richard Serra traces his investigation of drawing as an activity both independent from and linked to his sculptural practice. Serra's drawings have played a crucial role in his work for more than forty years, yet they have not been as widely recognized as his sculptures. This major exhibition features some sixty works from the 1970s to the present, including many loans from European and American public and private collections.

Kirchner to Max Beckmann, artists associated with German Expressionism in the early decades of the twentieth century took up printmaking with a collective dedication and fervor virtually unparalleled in the history of art. The woodcut, with its coarse gouges and jagged lines, is known as the preeminent Expressionist medium, but the Expressionists also revolutionized the mediums of etching and lithography to alternately vibrant and stark effect.

February 13-June 6, 2011 Picasso: Guitars 1912-1914- Sometime between October and December 1912, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) made a guitar. Cobbled together from cardboard, paper, string, and wire, materials that he cut, folded, threaded, and glued, Picasso’s silent instrument resembled no sculpture ever seen before.

An intriguing new artist’s residency in the making

Chatham, NY

In this small town in upstate New York, art dealer Sean Kelly has turned the former opera house and vaudeville venue, called Cady Hall, into a gallery space. In the past the hall has functioned as a studio space by Ellsworth Kelly in the 1970’s, a roller rink, and a miniature golf course. Sean Kelly renovated the historical building a few years ago and British conceptual artist Peter Liversidge was the first to be invited this summer for this informal residency. Kelly hopes to bring more artists to the quaint town.

In 2008 Businesswoman Zita Cobb invested her own funds to create the Shorefast Foundation in her childhood community of Fogo Island, Newfoundland. The foundation seeks to increase tourism and promote both the local and international contemporary art scene. In 2010 an artist-in-residency program was initiated, encouraging artists from all over the world to come and share their talents. Cobb, along with the Todd Saunders architectural firm, built art studios that are highly modern with artistic nods to the costal community. Artists can also stay in old fishing cabins that have been renovated to suit their needs. Along with the studios, Cobb is planning to open a boutique hotel with a contemporary art gallery and restaurant featuring local cuisine.

Farsad Labbauf

Farsad Labbauf was born in 1965 in Tehran, Iran. After thirteen years, he moved to the United States just after the revolution. Upon arriving in the U.S., he enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design. Although he began painting at a very young age, Farsad neither received nor believed in formal training in painting. He feels that such creativity comes from within and cannot be taught. At this time, Labbauf became preoccupied with ideas of perception. The pieces reflect the turbulent times experienced during revolution.

Anthony Gormley’s: Event Horizon Thirty-one life size body forms cast in iron and fiberglass will take over the pathways and sideways of Madison Square Garden and several rooftops of historic buildings along the Flatiron District starting Friday March 26th. Event Horizon was originally created for the Hayward Gallery in London, England as part of The Blind Light exhibition where the bodies were installed on rooftops, bridges, and streets along the Thames River. The installation which is sponsored by Madison Square Park Conservancy, will be on view until August 15th, 2010.

Austrian Vase 17th Century, estimated $20-$30,000, was sold June, 2009, for $65,000, with the collaboration of Brigitte Saint-Ouen and Sotheby’s.
Brigitte offered to the sell the vase at 32 Fine Arts Gallery, to clients, for $17,000. June 2009 the vase was sold for $65,000.

Max Ernst, "Une semaine de bonté" — the Original Collages

Lead by the revolutionary Andre Breton, the surrealism movement started in the early 1920’s and lasted during the brief calm of WWI and WWII. The style of surrealism is driven by juxtapositions and the joining of the unconscious fantasy with the everyday reality. German painter Max Ernst became part of this movement. This exhibition is his original collages, influenced by the wood engravings while at his stay in northern Italy during the summer of 1933.

“Ingres et les modernes”

Who says you can’t define art with another work of art? Ingres et le modernes does exactly that. This exhibition is a hommage to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ignes, a French neoclassical painter born in Montauban just outside the southern city of Toulouse. It is a curious and unique interpretation of his works helping to show us that we must keep a fresh perspective of his art.

“Peintures du Grand Siècle”

Chateau Royal de Blois, located in the historic Loire Valley, was one of France’s many beautiful castles which have since been deemed a national monument. It is now responsible for displaying some of arts most precious treasures. In this exhibition, the focus is primarily on the many different schools of art brought in from abroad during the 17^th century. This includes such influences as Italy, Flanders, Holland and Germany.

“Titien, Tintoret, Véronèse. Rivalités à Venise, 1540-1600” from 17 September to 4 January

This exhibition focuses on the works of the three leading figures of 16th century Venetian painting: Titian, the inventive genius, whose constant updating of an age old style is disconcerting; Tintoretto, the dynamic genius, whose art matured with superhuman energy; and Veronese, the decorative genius, whose Apollo like serenity fascinated every artist up to the 20th century. Mirroring their era, their chosen subjects reflect the tastes, emotions and torments of 16th century Venetians: their sufferings, surprising not only for the despair and violence that emerges from sacred paintings in a reputedly hedonistic society, but also the omnipresent cult of profane beauty, starting with that of women.

Futurism

Celebrating its centennial, Futurism first got its start when Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti published Futurist Manifesto, first on February 5, 1909 in La gazzetta dell'Emilia and then again in the French newspaper Le Figaro fifteen days later. He strongly expressed a hate for everything old, including art tradition and called for who he called the “young and strong futurists”. Artists featured in this exhibition will include Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini.

Turner and the Masters

Turner Prize 2009

John Baldessari: Pure Beauty

Monet’s Water Lilies

Unlike its last opening in 2004, this exhibition of Monet’s Water Lilies includes a full group of Claude Monet's late paintings. Reflections of Clouds on the Water-Lily Pond (c. 1920), a painting of the water lilies in the Japanese-style pond, Water Lilies, c. 1920, The Japanese Footbridge (c. 1920–22) and Agapanthus (1918–19) are only a few pieces that are being displayed in this collection.

Kandinsky

Though the Wassily Kandinsky is closely intertwined with the history of the Solomon, this exhibition is unlike its current ongoing Kandinsky gallery. About a hundred of his paintings are brought together by the generous efforts and help of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich as well as private collectors.

American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765–1915

Broken down into four sections, it exemplifies the every day life dating from pre-Revolutionary era up until the beginning of World War I. Some artists displayed include: John Singleton Copley, William Sidney Mount, George Caleb Bingham, Lilly Martin Spencer, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt among many others.

Brigitte’s Suggestion: The Metropolitan Museum will be offering two lectures associated with this exhibition on October 22 and 29 at 11am. The first will explore private stories from 1765 to 1980 while the second pertains to candid stories between 1860 and 1915. Tickets cost $40 for both.

The idea might be a little hard to grasp at first, since there is only one choice on the menu, a starter salad and steak frites served with a secret sauce. However, it does end with a choice of desserts or cheeses and a small selection of wines. Though this may seem limited, the food is anything but that. Once you are familiar with the system, it becomes a wonderful dining experience.

New to our neighborhood: Ace Hotel (Broadway and 29^th St.)

Near Madison Square Park and the famous Flatiron Building, the hotel’s many European guests appreciate that the Ace Hotel provides an authentic New York experience. The hotel’s restaurant, Breslin, (run by Ken Friedman and chef April Bloomfield of the Spotted Pig), will be open by mid-August, along with a café and clothing boutique. In the meantime, room service is provided by five local restaurants: Hill Country, Moonstruck Diner, Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop, Waldy’s Pizza and Izumi Sushi, a direct example of the diversity that makes New York unique. Along with the local menus, each room has a guest guide (with information about the hotel’s historic 105-year-old building), and insider tips for navigating the neighborhood -- from shoe-shines to shopping.

Daniel Boulud’s newest New York restaurant: DBGB Kitchen and Bar

Located in the Bowery, it is a tribute to that neighborhood’s famed rock club in name and attitude, but the food is what Boulud does best – French brasserie meets American tavern. They specialize in house-made sausages, with a variety of burgers, shellfish and other Lyonnais dishes. The restaurant’s dining room is partially open to the kitchen and has an industrial, very modern look, for a more casual dining experience than at Boulud’s nine other famed restaurants in New York, Las Vegas, Palm Beach, Beijing and Vancouver.

In far west Chelsea, the old el tracks which lay rusty and unused for years have been rehabilitated and turned into the city’s newest park space, The High Line, with boardwalks, grass, plantings and trees. Perfect for sunbathing, taking in the view, and visiting the local restaurants, shops and bakeries (including outposts of Maury Rubin’s City Bakery). The park runs from West 20^th St. and 10^th Ave. to Gansevoort and Washington Streets, with stairs up to the boardwalk at each end, and at 16^th and 18^th Streets. The park is even already organizing summer events, including guided gallery tours in nearby Chelsea with art curators, design, garden, and history oriented programs, and events for families. Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective

This retrospective examination of Francis Bacon’s career, celebrating the centenary of his birth in 1909, is the first major exhibition of his work in New York in twenty years. One of the most compelling artists of the past century, Bacon’s paintings are known for their boldness and their often nightmarish imagery, and many of his breakthrough works feature religious themes or base themselves on works of the old masters. The 130 paintings and archival items, as well as rare drawings, span each period and series of his work, focusing on the common themes and subjects that connected them.

Portraits, Pastels, Prints: Whistler in the Frick Collection

Henry Clay Frick collected twenty works by J. M. Whistler, including several full-length portraits, seascapes, and small scenes of Venice, all of which are displayed here for the first time together. Across various media, the viewer can clearly see Whistler’s commitment to aesthetic harmony and different effects of light and color. A small pastel of dusk in Venice has subtle shades of blue illuminating the sky, as if it glows from inside, and large full portraits capture the personality and modern style of their subjects. This carefully-selected collection shows Whistler’s full range as an artist, spanning three decades of his career.

James Ensor

Many of Ensor’s paintings look like they could be contemporary, but in fact he worked in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries – In the tradition of the grotesque, established by artists like Goya, Ensor’s work was an important avant-garde precursor to Expressionism. His paintings prominently use satire and caricature, and focus on themes and images of religion, the carnivalesque, masks, and skeletons. Early in his career Ensor’s paintings were considered scandalous and bizarre, but he gradually gained acceptance and acclaim in his native Belgium and throughout Europe. This exhibition of around 120 works was developed in conjunction with the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, where it will travel next, and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

The Female Gaze: Women Look at Women

This large group show investigates, in a wide variety of media, how women artists represent the female form. It challenges the traditional “male gaze,” the relationship of voyeur and object, which dominated in western art for centuries. Instead, these works look at the difference a female artist’s perspective makes, particularly with female subjects and in self-portraits. The show includes, among many others, works by Diane Arbus, Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin, Jenny Holzer, Marilyn Minter, Alice Neel, Cindy Sherman, and Kara Walker.

Henri Matisse and Modern Art on the French Riviera

Since becoming a tourist resort in the 1860s, the French Riviera has inspired generations of artists with its bright sunshine and sparkling coastline. This show of 42 paintings and sculptures, from museums and local private collections, includes works by Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Pierre Bonnard, Andre Derain, Pablo Picasso and Chaim Soutine. The distinctive light and color of southern France bring a special life to the landscapes, richly decorated rooms, portraits, and Matisse’s odalisques in this diverse, beautiful exhibit.

Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples

NEW YORK To celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the French New Wave cinema movement, the Museum of Art and Design is holding a film series of classic works this summer at their auditorium in Columbus Circle. Word for Word Authors Series in Bryant Park, 42^nd Street at 6^th Avenue (on the north side)

For the sixth summer in a row, Bryant Park is hosting its outdoor reading series, with a diverse group of authors stopping by to talk about their recent books and their thoughts on being a writer. Kicking off June’s writers is Christopher Buckley on the 3^rd discussing his memoir, Losing Mum and Pup, followed in the upcoming weeks by Simon Von Booy, Binnie Kirshenbaum, Monica Ali, Tom Coliccio, Jonathan Ames, Joseph O’Neill and others. There’s no better way to spend your lunch hour this summer if you’re in the midtown area.

New Hotels: where art isn’t merely decoration; in New York and Miami

Several new hotels in New York and Miami are incorporating modern and contemporary art into their design not merely as decoration – but as an important intellectual part of the hotel experience and atmosphere. The idea is that adding something to think about, and incorporating the visitor’s imagination in each part of the hotel makes it a special and memorable place to travel-weary guests, while at the same time providing a real venue for conceptual or minimalist art outside of the museum.

Thompson LES, NY (190 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton)

In the Thompson LES, giant light-boxes in the guests’ rooms feature photographs by Lee Friedlander, on the terrace stills from a film by Andy Warhol appear under the water in the bottom of the pool, and the restaurant has an installation of metallic sculptures by Peter Halley.

Cooper Square Hotel, NY (27 Cooper Square – Bowery between 5^th and 6^th)

Only a few blocks away, at the Cooper Square Hotel, the construction of the building itself was a collaborative process – the sleek new tower was constructed literally around the red brick tenement buildings, dating back to 1845, on Cooper Square. The new hotel restaurant by renowned chef Govind Armstrong, called Table 8, has just opened this past month as well, featuring fine New American cuisine.

Ace Hotel New York (20 West 29^th Street)

The latest in a series of art-centric hotels around the country, this New York branch has wall-size canvases in the guest rooms which were painted by 50 to 60 different street artists, most of which work locally. The paintings include sketches and upbeat phrases like “Everything is going to be alright” to bring a cheerful mood into every corner of the hotel.

Pod Hotel, NY (230 East 51^st Street)

The minimalist, clean aesthetic of the Pod Hotel was starting to feel a bit empty, so the designer, Vanessa Guilford, brought in J.M. Rizzi to paint city scenes and abstract forms directly onto the walls in the lobby, halls and in some of the guest rooms.

Gansevoort South, Miami (2377 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach)

Like its NY branch that displays photographs of historical buildings in the city which have since disappeared, the new Gansevoort South commissioned British artist Deborah Anderson to photograph some of the Art Deco architecture around Miami for its rooms and hallways, as well as staging pictures of tattooed models in 50s-style dress, mixing the modern with nostalgia.

Fontaine-bleau Miami Beach (4441 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach)

The Fontaine-bleau recently re-opened after an extensive renovation and expansion, and now includes light sculptures from James Turrell’s “Tall Glass” series which glow and shift their light at the reception desks.

Now – July 5: The Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn

Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea

This is the first NY show of Caillebotte’s work in over 30 years. Traditionally known as the “Urban Impressionist” for his Parisian cityscapes, he also painted many scenes of rural life on the coast of Normandy and in Yerres, where he had an estate. He was an experienced yachtsman and rower, and this added a realism in the perspective and color of his boating scenes; his goal was to get away from the theatricality that other artists like Manet added to their seascapes and instead present the world as it really was. This show also includes a version of his earliest masterpiece, “Floor-scrapers”, which was controversial and considered “vulgar” at the time for portraying laborers preparing a wooden floor.

Now – June 29: Neue Galerie, 1048 Fifth Avenue (at 86^th St.)

Brucke: The Birth of Expressionism in Dresden and Berlin, 1905-1913

A small and short-lived utopian artists’ group, Die Brucke (“the bridge”) aimed to connect the history of German folk art with the present, and innovate for the future. The most well-known member of the group was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and other key members were Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Combining their main inspirations – medieval woodcuts and symbolism, and the elemental African art that was popular with collectors at the time – these artists developed what became a trademark style of 20^th century art. The first major show on the group in the U.S., this exhibit features more than 100 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper including their well-known woodcut prints.

Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward

See more than 64 of Wright’s projects without using up your air miles – This special exhibit marks the 50^th anniversary of his design of the museum’s landmark building, and provides an extensive look at Wright’s work, from his own initial sketches to the plans for unrealized urban mega-structures. Independent of any one style, Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs all inspire tranquility, and merge functionality with form and beauty, as the museum itself demonstrates perfectly. Drawings and plans on paper, digital animations, scale models, many on view publically for the first time, give a fully three-dimensional view of his innovations and continuing relevance in contemporary architecture.

New Acquisitions since 2004

The Morgan Library continues what was a lifelong habit of its namesake, J.P. Morgan – collecting works of art in all genres and media, from old masters to contemporary artists. The library’s goal is not to collect the grandest works, but to capture the creative process, through drawings, studies, and a large manuscript collection. This exhibit of over 100 recent additions to the museum includes works on paper and watercolors by Rembrandt, Matisse, John Singer Sargent, Egon Schiele and Red Grooms; personal letters by Oscar Wilde and Vincent Van Gogh, posters by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol; and much more.

Year of Fashion

Three photographers are currently being exhibited at the ICP: Richard Avedon, David Seidner, and John Wood. Avedon revolutionized fashion photography, and this show of over 200 works brings together some his most dynamic and iconic images, which captured the greatest personalities and styles over the past six decades. Seidner’s photographs are of miniature dresses and mannequins created in 1945 for a wildly popular travelling French fashion show. Wood’s work is more avant-garde, juxtaposing and manipulating images in order to create a social commentary.

Remembering Henry’s Show: Selected Works 1978-2008

Peter Brant has recently opened his new Brant Foundation Art Study Center, which will develop a permanent collection as well as host temporary shows curated by Brant himself and other guest curators. This first show’s title is a reference to Henry Geldzhaler’s historic 1969 exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which defined the careers of living artists at the time. Like it, Brant’s exhibit brings together a large number of sculptures and paintings—all from his own extensive collection—by more than 25 of the most renowned artists of the past 30 years including Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, Richard Prince, Richard Serra, John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton, Christopher Wool, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Brant’s mentor when he had just begun collecting art, Andy Warhol. Visitors enter the refurbished stone barn that houses the private museum and see a portrait of Henry Geldzhaler by Dennis Hopper, punctuating the curator’s importance to Brant in developing his own mission as a collector-cum-curator: to really care about and work with the artists directly. Georgia O’Keefe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities

Two of America’s best-known landscape artists are brought together in this exhibit, and while they might seem an unlikely pairing they were actually lifelong friends after meeting in Taos, New Mexico. They each captured the natural world in their own distinctive styles, but this show of over 100 paintings and photographs highlights the parallels between their work, as well as grounding it among other contemporary artists such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston.

Zaha Hadid, models, drawings and photographs of the architect’s work

Zaha Hadid was born October 31, 1950 in Baghdad, Iraq. She received a degree in mathematics from the American University of Beirut before moving to study at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. After graduating she worked with her former teachers, Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, becoming a partner in 1977. It was with Koolhaas that she met the engineer Peter Rice who gave her support and encouragement early on, at a time when her work seemed difficult to build. In 1980 she established her own London-based practice.

Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective

The West: Myth, Character, and Reinvention by Andy Warhol

This film screening brings a selection of Warhol’s early films together. All inspired by and shot in California and Arizona during a road trip to Los Angeles for an exhibit of his screen-prints. The various films, including Elvis at Ferus (1963) and Tarzan and Jane Regained…Sort of (1963), explore Hollywood iconography and archetypes through his ironic filtered view, with parodies of celebrities, exaggerating their public tragic moments.

Jenny Holzer: PROTECT PROTECT

For over thirty years, Jenny Holzer's work has paired the use of text and the centrality of installation to examine emotional and societal realities. Her choice of forms and media brings a sensate experience to the contradictory voices, opinions, and attitudes that shape everyday life. With a turn in practice towards greater visual and environmental presence, Holzer joins political bravura with formal beauty, sensitivity, and power. With essays by Joan Simon and Elizabeth A. T. Smith, and an interview with the artist by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, this publication centers on Jenny Holzer's work from 1990 to the present. Paperback, Hatje Cantz Publishers, 128 pages. 2008.

Sophie Calle: Take Care of Yourself

This travelling exhibition, organized originally for the 2007 Venice Biennale, is the latest of Calle’s often controversial explorations of her emotional and psychological life and relationships. In the show Sophie Calle asks a wide variety of women to respond to a break-up letter she received, and she documents their interpretations through photography, text, and video. From a fairytale to a scientific study, the responses from the 107 different women explore the possibilities of human emotions and identity. Like much of Calle’s work, (such as The Hotel, where she worked as a maid to photograph the private belongings of hotel guests,) this exhibition studies the mix of strangers and intimate information; our public and private selves.

April 8 – June 14: The New Museum of Contemporary Art; 235 Bowery

The Generational: Younger Than Jesus

The reviews are in and they’re a rave for this survey of contemporary art from around the globe, unified only by the age of the 50 artists represented – 33 years old or younger. One of the visitor favorites is a video, titled Choose…, from Romanian artist Ciprian Muresan, of his young son mixing Pepsi and Coke together, creating the perfect consumerist beverage. Another video shows an installation from before the opening of the exhibit, where a complete cardboard replica of Rome was built and then destroyed, all in one day, in the museum’s lobby. There are works in all media – paintings, photographs, light sculptures, even live installations – many of which appear on loan from top art collectors, including the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

March 26 – June 6: Gagosian Gallery; 522 W. 21^st Street (betw. 10^th and 11^th Avenues)

Pablo Picasso: Mosqueteros

This is the first exhibition in the US in 25 years to focus on the late years of Picasso’s career – featuring works on loan from MoMA, Museo Picasso Malaga, as well as private collections – and the sheer number of painting, prints, and drawings on display is striking. The theme is images of matadors, musketeers, and other figures from history, as characters in the imagination of Picasso and his inner circle of friends, artists, and writers. His wife and muse, Jacqueline Roque, has a large influence on this series as well, with a frankness in these later nudes that reflects the contemporary nature of these works, and Picasso’s ability to adapt to the modern candor in the 60s and 70s. The show is curated by John Richardson, Picasso’s biographer and friend, and an extensively illustrated book with essays from art historians as well as artists like Jeff Koons will be published to accompany the show.

The exhibition features 50 objects from the tomb of Tutankhamun including the gold sandals that adorned the mummie’s feet and a beautifully adorned canopic jar that held his mummified internal organs. In addition to the treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, 80 ancient artifacts are featured, which highlight many of the most significant rulers of ancient Egypt such as Khefren, whose great pyramid is the only remaining structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Hatshepsut, the queen who became king.

Rooftop Garden

SFMOMA's long-awaited space for large-scale sculpture features a combination of well-known, rarely seen, and recently acquired works from the museum's collection. Sculptures spanning the last five decades by artists such as Robert Arneson, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Mario Merz, and Henry Moore are featured in the Rooftop Garden, in both open-air and enclosed spaces. In addition, a site-specific installation by former SECA Art Award recipient Rosana Castrillo Díaz animates the glass-walled bridge that leads visitors from the interior fifth-floor galleries out onto the rooftop.

Coming to our neighborhood next autumn – restaurateur Danny Meyer of Gramercy Tavern and Blue Smoke will be creating the new restaurant for the Gramercy Park Hotel. His goal is to make it very accessible to the people who live nearby, to become a new staple of the neighborhood and bring a lively local energy to the hotel. Tracey Stern’s SalonTea: Think of it as Marie Antoinette's tea house…if the French queen had been a disco queen. Loud orange walls, hot-pink countertops and—wait for it—a working disco ball hold court at this new Upper East Side tea salon from socialite-about-town Tracey Stern. "You're not coming in and choosing from 300 teas, which I find annoying," she says of her selection, which comes in seven blends—red, green, decaf, etc.—sourced from private estates in China and India, and is available as lattes or iced-tea infusions. Stern's also got a line of tea perfumes, tea pots and tea lip balm—as well as a sense of humor: When the weather warms up, she plans to have costumed staff stand outside in full Marie Antoinette garb with pink feather fans and white go-go boots. Blame it on the boogie, baby.

A bit of Parisian flair in Harlem? Mais, oui! -- Chez Lucienne. Upper West Sider Matthew Tivy, who also owns Café du Soleil and Tokyo Pop a few blocks south, partnered up with fellow Daniel grad Jerome Bougherdani to open this classic French bistro that isn’t afraid to take risks (calf’s-foot croquettes anyone?). Executive chef Thomas Obaton, who was born in Lyon, France, lends some street cred to the intimate space (there’s just 60 seats), and though a pizza oven hood is left over from its prior incarnation as a pizza joint, he won’t be serving up slices—they don't quite pair that well with chocolate coulant and pistachio ice cream now, do they?

After work or shopping in midtown, the new French restaurant to drop into is Bar Breton, owned by Cyril Renaud, the talented chef of the recently-closed Fleur de Sel. He has replaced it with this more casual and welcoming bistro in the Flatiron district featuring all your favorite classic French dishes. The house’s specialty is a type of crêpe Renaud calls a galette, in the style of his native Brittany, with everything from eggs and chorizo to Nutella as a filling. The main courses span from rabbit roulade to the haute-burger that has become such a staple at popular NY restaurants.
